Description
On the western flank of the Kemmelberg lies a French mass grave from the First World War. At the top of the climb is a memorial column for the fallen. However, the cobblestones also claimed victims in the cycling peloton. Hendrik Redant, Andrei Tchmil, Chris Peers during the Three Days of De Panne. But above all, there was that series of terrifying tumbles during the 2007 edition of Gent-Wevelgem, with several badly wounded cyclists being transported to a hospital. The call to remove the Kemmel from the course sounded, but the organizers had a better solution: a new descent via asphalt roads offered the ideal alternative to save the face of Gent-Wevelgem.
