Description
Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of the Balearic island of Mallorca. It is marked by the lighthouse Faro Formentor and is also called "meeting point of the winds" by the Mallorcans. The 18 km long cul-de-sac from Port de Pollença leads over the peninsula Formentor up to the Cap. The peninsula acts as a northern boundary to the bay of Pollença and represents the eastern foothills of the largest Majorcan mountain range, the Serra de Tramuntana.
The road, built by the Italian engineer Antonio Paretti on the steep coast, offers numerous panoramas over the coastal mountains and is therefore one of the most beautiful on Mallorca. At the first high point, the Mirador de Mal Pas, Paretti, who also built the road to Sa Calobra, was set a monument. Here there is also the possibility of turning off from the road to the Cap and to master the short climb to the old watchtower of Almallutx (348 m). Due to the great view, the side trip is definitely worthwhile. As it is a cul-de-sac and there are also no larger towns on the peninsula, the traffic is almost exclusively tourist nature and in a bearable measure.
