Description
This side of the climb has an almost constant grade of 9% for 17.8km. Eight kilometers of road leading to the summit have not been asphalted.
The climb has been for the first time in the Giro d'Italia in 2005. The climb became really epic because of the attack of Chris Froome. He produced one of the all-time great solo rides to win Stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia and take the overall lead. The Team Sky rider attacked 80km from the finish on the second of the day’s four climbs, the Colle delle Finestre, and went on to win by 3'00" from runner-up Richard Carapaz (Movistar Team) and by 3'07" from third-placed Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ). Tom Dumoulin finished 3'23" down in fifth. Former race leader Simon Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) was dropped early on the Colle delle Finestre and went on to lose more than 38 minutes. By winning this stage Chris Froome also won the Giro of 2018.
