The road goes up through the Pine Canyon, better known as Empire Pass. In all previous races (before 2018) of the Tour of Utah, the riders had to battle the road conditions as well as the 10-20% grades. Since 2017 the road has been repaved.

The first 2km of the climb where used by Keegan Swenson in his Everesting attempt. He climb 8848 meters in 7.40 hours.
