Description
During the Amstel Gold Race of 1991 in the descent to Eys, the local authorities did broken up the Wittemeweg for recovery just 2 days before the race. The local authorities have assured Herman Krott (the race director) that they have flattened the road so the riders can ride over it. Unfortunately, they let the traffic pass for two days, causing stones, cinders and sand to come loose. The majority of the peloton is suddenly confronted with the bad road. At least thirty riders, maybe forty, get a flat tire. 'Race forgery', says Maassen afterwards. Later Krott would say over the stretch of unpaved road at Eys 'We had no alternative. The only way to reach the Eyserbosweg was via that gravel path'.
On this climb, Valverde felt during the Tour de France of 2006. He had to abandon the Tour with a fractured right collarbone.
