Description
Here at the summit is La Hutte, where at Christmas 1914 football was played between British and German soldiers. The Christmas record is permanently remembered with a small but special monument, this is located to the left of the route, follow Plaque Bairnsfather, the British front cartoonist who made a situation sketch of the football match. On the descent is the impressive Ploegsteert Memorial, a war memorial in honour of British casualties from the First World War. The memorial stands at the British military cemetery Berks Cemetery Extension. At the end of 2013, a visitor centre also opened here. The Plugstreets, the semi-paved roads that were included in the Ghent-Wevelgem route of 2017, are also located here.
