Description
The Kluisberg is just like for example the Hotond, the Oudenberg (Kapelmuur in Geraardsbergen) and the Kemmel a so-called witness hill. The shape of the slope is an indication of what the landscape looked like about three million years ago. As a sandbank off the coast of a tropical North Sea at the time.
Only Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne and Dwars door Vlaanderen have the Kluisberg on their way. Both send the peloton from Ruien to the top, via a wide asphalt track that hides the round cobblestones. Another possibility, often used in the past by various races, is a run-up via Orroir in Hainaut. From Mont de l'Enclus to Kluisberg. But on that side too, the cobblestones have long been covered with an asphalt coating.
This climb was initially included in the course of Dwars door Vlaanderen 2020, but due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, this race was cancelled.
