Description
Monte Carpegna is known in the region as the Pirate Mountain, named after the beloved and unforgettable Marco Pantani, who had his permanent training route there. At the top, there is a monument in honor of Pantani to admire. The statue of Il Pirata was made by sculptor Franco Tigli to honor his heroic deeds. It has become the destination of an endless pilgrimage of cyclists who come every year to pay homage to the pirate and his mountain. It is said that Pantani - instead of exploring the stages of the Giro or the Tour, as other riders did - liked to ride alone on the Carpegna.
