Description
The Battle of Messines of 7 June 1917 is considered to be the best executed battle of World War I. The New Zealand Division takes Messines on the same day . After Messines and the surrounding trenches were conquered, the New Zealanders laid down the new front line and built new defensive points. In memory of this fact, the New Zealand Memorial was erected here. The New Zealand Memorial was inaugurated by King Albert I on 1 August 1924. Since 1975 Messines has been twinned with the New Zealand town of Featherston.
