Description
The climb (18.0 km) ascends along the north-eastern side of the Etna, following a constant succession of hairpins, besides more or less recent lava streams. The road is very passable and there are no large precipices along the road. The mean gradient is 6.6%, with slopes averaging 9% over the last 3 km (and especially around -2,000 m), and topping out at 11% with 1.5 km to go. Eventually, you end up at Piano Provenzana. This is the highest point you can reach by car on the north side of the volcano. You are then at an altitude of just under 1800 meters.
