Description
The Port d'Aula is one of the highest accessible points in the French Pyrenees. In the Vallée d'Ustou a road leads from Pont de la Taule to the village of Couflens. Here begins the very steep and curvy (15%) ascent over the Col de Pause (1527 m) up to the Port d'Aula (2260 m). Along the way, several lookout points offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains of Mont Valier (2838) and the Pic de Montaud (2496 m). The Port d'Aula is located on the border to Spain. From here, the Pico de Moredo (2760 m) in the south is clearly visible. The road is good from Pont de la Taule is Couflens, until Col de Pause only moderately well paved. Afterwards follows a nature trail. The countless, narrow curves require driving skills. Also the isolated bare rock passages require increased attention. A continuation to Spain is not possible due to the partially slippery route.
