Description

Before 1991 the climb to Valdezcaray used three times in the Vuelta. Sean Kelly won up here in 1988. The Irishman’s success underlines that this finish won’t entirely suit the pure climbers as this is a long rather than a steep ascent.

In 2012 stage 4 (the finish line was not as high as in the early days) it was again climbed. Simon Clarke won the stage from the breakaway just 2 seconds in front of Tony Martin. That day Alejandro Valverde lost the leaders jersey to Joaquim Rodríguez after some echelons by Team Sky.
