Description
The steep climb is often decisive in the Strade Bianche. When the climb passes beneath Fontebranda Gate where the road surface becomes paving slabs, the gradient exceeds 10%, reaching its highpoint of 17% in Via Santa Caterina.
In 2018 Wout van Aert got a cramp and had to walk up the last part of the climb to become 3rd in the race after all. The epic images of this climb went viral on social media which contributes to the mythical character of the Strade Bianche.
"I'm making history right here," grinned Wout van Aert after the finish in Siena. And he wasn't talking about his third place. He was talking about his final climb along the steep Via Santa Caterina. "I think I'm the first rider in the Strade Bianche who entered the final slope on foot. The last five meters I had a cramp and had to go up on foot. I was completely broken. I'm glad I made it to the finish."
