Colle di Superga

Der Colle di Superga ist ein Anstieg von 4.6 Kilometer. Dies ist ein Anstieg der Kategorie 2. Er liegt in Torino, Piemonte, Italien. Die durchschnittliche Steigung dieses Anstiegs beträgt 9.2% mit einem Maximum von 13.2%. Der Colle di Superga steigt von 241 Meter am Anfang bis 668 Meter an der Spitze, mit insgesamt 426 Höhenmetern.

Beschreibung

The verdant hills overlooking the city, opposite the mountains, are home to the majestic Basilica of Superga, the finish location of the Milano-Torino Classic. It is connected to the city either by the race route or by the suggestive Sassi tramway, which runs along the hill. The Basilica was commissioned by Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy, and designed by the gifted architect, Juvarra (just as Palazzo Madama). This Baroque building houses the Royal Tombs, devised for the members of the House of Savoy, which can be accessed from inside the Basilica and can be visited during opening hours.

The Colle di Superga is also known by the the Superga air disaster which occurred on 4 May 1949, when a plane carrying the entire Torino football team (popularly known as the Grande Torino), crashed into the retaining wall at the back of the Basilica of Superga. Thirty-one people died, there were no survivors.

In 1958 the arrival of the 4th stage of the Giro d'Italia was at the top of the Colle di Superga, which was won by the Spanish Federico Bahamontes.

Until 2007 the Colle di Superga was just 16 kilometres from the finish of Milano-Torino. The Colle di Superga climb is often the springboard for a group of riders to escape before the finish in the Fausto Coppi velodrome in Turin. Since the 2012 edition of Milano - Torino the finish was moved to the top of the Colle di Superga which they need to climb 2 times in the race.
