Beschreibung

The highest climb in the Catalonia region, Vallter 2000 will be familiar to cycling fans with both Nairo Quintana and Tejay van Garderen climbing to victory on the 11.4 km climb at the Volta a Catalunya in recent years.

At 2144m, Vallter 2000 is the highest of only four climbs that top 2000m in the region making it the king of Catalonia. Although there aren’t any really steep double-digit pitches the average gradient of 7.4% speaks for itself, rarely gifting you any respite.

In March 2013, for the first time, Vallter 2000 hosted the third stage of the Tour of Catalonia. Nairo Quintana won at the top ahead of Alejandro Valverde who became the leader of the race. A year later, in March 2014, still, on the Tour of Catalonia, the American Tejay van Garderen won the fourth stage arriving at Vallter 2000-Setcases, in thick fog, ahead of Romain Bardet, a few seconds ahead of the group of the main favorites among whom Alberto Contador, Joaquim Rodríguez wearing the leader jersey, Nairo Quintana, Andrew Talansky and Christopher Froome.

In 2018 the Volta a Catalunya stage 3 route was radically changed. Given the real risk of avalanches on the way to Vallter 2000 and because of the strong wind that was forecasted, the finish line was set in Camprodon.
