Description
On this climb in the 13th stage (to the Lagos de Covadonga) of the Vuelta 1996, the career of Michael Indurain stops. That day Tony Rominger attacked here. This provoked a reaction from race leader Zülle and his ONCE team. Because of this Indurain had to release the group. This was watched by the TV-cameras which followed every pedal stroke. Marino Alonso stayed with his team leader for a while, until Indurain urged him to continue, insisting he could not follow.
More than four minutes after the leaders crossed the Fito, Indurain descended the pass with his former team-mate Herminio Díaz Zabala, who tried to encourage him. But down in the valley, shortly after the gruppetto had reached him and after having consulted his stage map several times, Indurain stopped on the right side of the road, before crossing the road and going straight to the lobby of the Hotel El Capitán, Banesto's house for the night.
