Description
The Montée de Pipay was climbed for the first time in a professional race during the Dauphine of 2019. Due to the harsh weather conditions it was a long wait for fireworks in the group of favourites. On the final climb Quintana, Kwiatkowski, Bardet and Pinot showed themselves with an attack, but not a single attempt succeeded.
It was not until Buchmann's attempt that the bunch broke into parts. Just for a while, because Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) got back to him at 2 kilometers from the finish line quite easily. The duo seemed to be able to fight for the victory, but that was not counted on Wout Poels (Team Ineos), who had a great acceleration that nobody was able to follow. The Dutchman overtook Buchmann and Fuglsang in the last few meters and was victorious after all.
