Description
"Until the end of 2012 the small community of Molenstede had no less than three full-fledged professional cyclists: Sergei Ivanov, Geert Verheyen and Mario Aerts. Grasbos was more or less their plaything, the place where they could hurt themselves during training.
But why is it that this hump got its nickname from the Poggio, that legendary hump that is the decisive point in Milan-Sanremo almost every year?
Sergei Ivanov, now owner of a thriving bicycle business in Scherpenheuvel, knows. In the past, because of the bad road surface, hardly any tourists passed that mountain. This has changed thanks to my mentor Billy Reynders and advertisements on TV. The Poggio di Molenstede was born. Reynders, then still an alderman in Diest, had the road asphalted and from then on in good weather thousands of cyclists pass over the Poggio.
