Descrizione
The Bemelerberg is a steady climb with a faint S-bend. It is a fast climb with parts of 5-6%, but not more and it is shrouded in forests. The Bergrust Hotel is halfway and as the "top" gets closer, the slope becomes less wide and you enter open farmland. The Cauberg is certainly tougher, but this climb can be just as decisive in races, as it is easier to jump and stay away on this climb.
In 2017 the route of the Amstel Gold Race underwent a further alteration and the Bemelerberg is now the final ascent, a little over 7km from the finish in Berg en Terblijt, just outside Valkenburg.
In the Amstel Gold Race of 2017 just after the final climb of the Bemelerberg Philippe Gilbert accelerates and only Kwiatkowski follows. In the last kilometer, the Pole tries to surprise his fellow attacker, but he doesn't allow himself to be fooled and wins the Amstel Gold Race for the fourth time.
