Descrizione
This pass is the 3rd highest road pass in the French Alps after the Bonette (2802 m) and Iseran (2770 m). The Agnel pass was first climbed in the Tour de France in 2008.
The climb is perhaps better known by its crashes in the descent:
- In the 15th stage of 2008 Tour de France, Óscar Pereiro Sío crashed over a guardrail just prior to a hairpin turn during the descent of the Col Agnel (Italian side) landing on the other side of the turn, which meant the end of the Tour for him.
- In stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia 2016, Steven Kruijswijk crashed on the descent of the Colle dell'Agnello (French side) whilst following an attack by Nibali and Chaves, landing on a bank of snow on the side of the road. Although he was able to continue, Kruijswijk finished the stage almost five minutes down on Nibali and more than four minutes behind Chaves, thus dropping to third overall.
- Tour de France 2008 - Stage 15
