This climb is mostly famous because of the ninth stage of the Tour de France in 2003, the group of favourites chased away Alexandre Vinokourov on the descent of the Côte de la Rochette to Gap after the short climb of the Col de Manse, when Joseba Beloki lost control of his bike on the melted asphalt. The Spanish leader of Once-Eroski broke his hip, collarbone and thigh. Lance Armstrong, who rode behind Beloki, remained lucid and plunged into a barren lawn. Armstrong then jumped over a stream like a cyclo-cross rider, after which he continued the chase with his competitors. Vinokourov eventually won the stage.
