Descrizione
In the fifties and sixties the steep Kloosterstraat was often included as a hill in the course of the Tour of Flanders. At that time this hill was a cobbled road.
The famous Muur van Geraardsbergen was previously (1950-1952) included in the Tour of Flanders, but caused chaotic scenes. That is why the organization skipped the Wall and chose the Kloosterstraat. It was not until 1970 that the Muur was again included in the Tour of Flanders and the route over the Kloosterberg disappeared.
The organizer of the Tour de France, Jacques Goddet, who had seen the first crossing of the Wall of Geraardsbergen in the Tour de Flanders in 1950, was so enthusiastic that he decided to include the Wall of Geraardsbergen in the next Tour de France. The first crossing of the Tour de France happened on Thursday 5 July 1951: in order to avoid any difficulties on the narrow Wall, Goddet kicked it out of the race and decided to take a detour along the Kloosterberg - Oude Steenweg.
The streets, of which the lower part is also the prelude to the Muur van Geraardsbergen in the earlier versions of the Tour of Flanders, is no longer called Kloosterstraat but Abdijstraat. But the climb is still called the Kloosterstraat.
