Beschrijving

The climb to Aramón Formigal is one of the most iconic ascents of the Aragón Pyrenees. Its slopes are gentle, never going beyond 10% at its steepest, with an average of 4,6% on its final 14,6 kilometres.
Aramón Formigal hosted one of the most remarkable cycling races of the decade: the 15th stage of La Vuelta 2016. That day, Alberto Contador launched an early attack that ended up costing Chris Froome his chances of overall victory and helping Nairo Quintana’s prospects of triumphing in Madrid.
Aramón Formigal has been summit finish of La Vuelta in another four occasions, with victory corresponding to José Manuel ‘Tarangu’ Fuente (1972), Agustín Tamames (1975), Pedro Torres (1977) and Warren Barguil (2013).

In the sixth stage of the Vuelta 2020, the route would initially lead over the Col de Portalet, the Col d'Aubisque and finally a finish at the top of the Tourmalet. As a result of the Corona problems and the more stringent measures that followed, the organisation decided to adapt the stage and no longer ride over French territory.
The organisation presented an alternative stage. The riders will go over the Alto de Petralba, the Puerto de Cotefablo, after which they will finish at the Sallent de Gállego-Aramón Formigal ski station.

The alternative stage became an interesting battle between the leaders. On this hard wet day of racing in the Pyrenees saw Ion Izagirre (Astana) fly to victory. Ion Izagirre dropped his breakaway companions with a strong attack 3km away from the summit finish. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) took over La Roja from Primoz Roglic, who had a rare breakdown due to the cold and problems with his rain jacket, as the new general leader of La Vuelta 2020.
