Beschrijving
The Amstel Gold Race has had its finish on Cauberg since 2003. The race often finishes with an uphill sprint of a small group of cyclists on Cauberg. This happens after competitors have already climbed Cauberg twice. Since 2017 The last climb of the Cauberg was removed so that the Geulhemmerberg and Bemelerberg (7.4km from the finish) are the last climbs now. It was done so that the race was less locked.
According to Leo van Vliet, the finish on the Cauberg only became a possibility after Holland Casino was open to a new arrival location. "We raced over the Cauberg in the final those years, but that was still quite far from the finish. And there was always grumbling from Holland Casino about the accessibility and road closures. So I didn't think it would ever work out. Until I heard Holland Casino director Peter Michalides say: 'Then they'd better finish here. I immediately went to him and asked if he meant what he said. Because I had been dreaming of such a finish for years."
The name Cauberg is possibly derived from the Celtic word kadeir or calm, which means 'height' or 'hill'.
The Cauberg has been included in many other Dutch cycling races such as Eneco Tour, Ster ZLM Toer, Olympia's Tour and Dutch National Road Racing Championships.
Three Grand-Tours have included Cauberg in their route: the 1992 Tour de France (7th stage), the 2006 Tour de France (3rd stage) and the 2009 Vuelta a España (4th stage).
The UCI Road World Championships have been centered on Cauberg five times (1938, 1948, 1979, 1998 and 2012 UCI Road World Championships).
