Beschrijving
For the first time the col is on the programme of the 15th stage of the 2017 Tour de France between Laissac-Sévérac l'Église and Le Puy-en-Velay. Climbed from Prades and the Allier valley and then on the commune of Saint-Bérain, it has been classified as a 1st category climb. It was French rider Warren Barguil who crossed it in the lead.
Its ascent from the Allier over 8.3 km with an average gradient of 7.4% includes a section called the "Mur de Saint-Bérain", 1.1 km at 14%, including a passage at 22%. This climb was "discovered" by journalist Pierre Chany, who suggested it to Thierry Cazeneuve and Charly Mottet when the latter was "looking for a route to Le Puy-en-Velay during the 1997 Critérium du Dauphiné "
Its ascent is again planned for the 2nd stage of the 2021 Critérium du Dauphiné, but far from the finish.
