Beschrijving
This is the finish climb of the 9th stage of the Vuelta 2019. The climb was categorized in three parts of climbs. The Alto de la Comella is the first part of the climb. It's short at 4km, but not very sweet at an average of almost nine percent.
The road drops for a mere 2km before ascending the next second-cat climb, the Alto de Engolasters, which is 5km at eight percent. This leads onto a short plateau, where route director Fernando Escartín has unearthed a four-kilometer stretch of gravel road. Anyone suffering a mechanical issue here could be significantly penalized as this sterrato leads straight onto the final ascent that carries it above the 2,000-mark to the line.
Pogačar won the 9th stage of the Vuelta here in 2019. During the climb in 2019 it had started to rain and hail in Andorra, where in the final there was also a large unpaved strip in the course. Quintana and Valverde managed to get away from Roglič, who had to chase him because of a motard manoeuvre. The Movistar leaders joined (the also fallen) López, after which Quintana attacked again with Pogačar in his wheel. Roglič followed half a minute from Quintana. Marc Soler started with a lead on the final climb to Cortals d'Encamp, but behind him, the duo Quintana-Pogačar were fast approaching. Shaking his head and gesticulating wildly, Soler, in an excellent position to win the stage, kept his legs still to help his leader. Roglič joined the group López and Valverde, but the world champion wanted to avoid that by attacking. In the end, Quintana's pace was too slow for Pogačar. The 20-year-old top talent from Slovenia shook the Colombian and Soler out of his wheel three kilometers before the top and won the stage with a 23-second lead.
