Beschrijving
Going south in Orduña, the route arrows across a plain towards the magnificent cliff faces of the Sierra Salbada, the road beginning to weave as it approaches what appears to be an impregnable rock wall. The climb is 7.8km long and averages 7.7 percent, with many pitches at 11, 12 and even 13 percent on occasions. As it winds up through 15 hairpins, the slope gradually gets more abrupt until a final ramp that rears up to 14 percent and leads into a final kilometer to the summit that’s not even one-third as steep.
It's a classic climb in the Vuelta a España, played a major role, especially in the 1973 Vuelta a España, where Eddy Merckx gave a wonderful performance. It was here that his fiercest rival, Luís Ocaña, launched an attack, which left the Belgian hanging. It did serve to leave him behind, but in the rear, until he reached Miranda de Ebro, Merckx caught up with Ocaña.
Most of the pro riders will be well acquainted with the climb of the Orduña, which features regularly in the Tour of the Basque Country.
