Opis
This ascent is home to the highest asphalted border crossing in Europe. The col is less known but the Italian side is heavy and has been the Cima Coppi in the Giro d'Italia several times. In the last 10 km, the peloton will cover an altitude of about 1000 meters. As a result, they almost continuously climb above an average of 10%. This is a bit heavier than most other high cols in the Alps.
The climb is perhaps better known by its crashes in the descent:
- In the 15th stage of 2008 Tour de France, Óscar Pereiro Sío crashed over a guardrail just prior to a hairpin turn during the descent of the Col Agnel (Italian side) landing on the other side of the turn, which meant the end of the Tour for him.
- In stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia 2016, Steven Kruijswijk crashed on the descent of the Colle dell'Agnello (French side) whilst following an attack by Nibali and Chaves, landing on a bank of snow on the side of the road. Although he was able to continue, Kruijswijk finished the stage almost five minutes down on Nibali and more than four minutes behind Chaves, thus dropping to third overall.
As a result of the Corona problems and the more stringent measures adopted as a result, the Giro 2020 was not allowed to cross French territory at stage 20.
As a result, the passage over the Agnello, Izoard and Montgenèvre has been replaced by a triple climb to the ski village of Sestriere.
- Giro d'Italia 1994 - Stage 20
- Giro d'Italia 1995 - Stage 19 (An avalanche caused the ascent to be cancelled.)
- Giro d'Italia 2000 - Stage 19
- Tour de France 2011 - Stage 18
- Giro d'Italia 2016 - Stage 18
