Monte Zoncolan

Opis

This route is less demanding than the famous road from Ovaro but it still is one of Italy's most challenging climbs. It was featured for the first time in the 1997 Giro Donne (Yes lady's first) and later in the 2003 Giro d'Italia. The actual climb to the summit starts at Sutrio and is 13.4 kilometres long at an average of 8.7% with an elevation gain of 1,210 metres (3,970 ft) and a maximum gradient being 23%. The most demanding section is the final 3.5 kilometres with an average gradient of 13% and the initial part of the final kilometre at 22% grade.

That Mario Cipollini did not like climbing is well known. The sprinter won 42 Giro stages, but never when the road went up. In 2003 he was so upset that the twelfth stage ended on the Zoncolan that he threatened to ride up with a mountain bike. It never came to that, because Cipollini had already dismounted before that.
