Opis
The col des Glières, classified as Hors Catégorie, is crossed from Le Petit-Bornand-les-Glières for the first time during the 10th stage of the 2018 edition of the Tour de France, with Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe in the lead. It became an instant classic. During World War II, the Plateau de Glières was a vital supply line for local Resistance groups. Because it was so high and inaccessible (to the enemy) it was the site of parachute drops from Allied aircraft – one included 45 tonnes of weapons.
The plateau of Les Glières, reached via the climb of Thorens-Glières, was beforehand the finish of the last stage of the Tour de l'Avenir 2013. Julian Alaphilippe took the lead in the break.
In the immediate vicinity of the pass, the National Monument to the Resistance on the Glières Plateau has been built.
