Descripción
On this climb one could earn the first mountain points in the Giro of 2020 and thus become a wearer of the mountain jersey. During the fifteen kilometre long opening time trial from Monreale to Palermo Rick Zabel rode the fastest on this one and only climb of the day, allowing him to wear the Maglia Azzurra.
He opted for a climbing bike, went full speed from the start, and made a bike change at the top. "Normally I don't have a chance of getting a good result in a time trial," Zabel says on his team's website. "But I liked this short climb perfectly. It was an effort of about 90 seconds. Now that there was a jumper to be earned at the summit, why not try it?"
Zabel was the only rider who chose to challenge the climb on his normal bike. With a time of one minute and 35 seconds, he turned out to be the fastest on the climb. Peter Sagan - who did ride a time trial bike - had to settle for second place. Davide Ballerini finished third. "Tomorrow I will start as a sprinter in the blue climbing jersey," said Zabel. "How cool is that?"
