Descripción
With only two times being part of the Tour of Spain, Cumbre del Sol has already become a mythical location. This is due to the fact that cyclists of a very high level have won here on the difficult slopes such as Tom Dumoulin and Chris Froome.
The victory of the Dutchman in 2015 happened after an exciting final in which three cyclists (Joaquim Rodriguez, Chris Froome and Dumoulin himself) came together with several chances at only 100 meters from the finish line. The victory seemed to be in for the British Froome, but Tom Dumoulin took it away from him at the last moment.
Two years later, in 2017, the winner of four Tours, Chris Froome, proved that he was determined to win the Vuelta. He was the leader of the class for 19 of the 21 days and in Cumbre del Sol he had a memorable victory, achieving the final goal on his own after a major attack in the last kilometer.
